Embracing the Freedom of the Water
As a seasoned expert in water and sanitation services, community engagement, and advocacy, I have dedicated over 20 years to ensuring safe and accessible water experiences for people of all ages and abilities. My passion for aquatic recreation has been a constant thread throughout my career, from managing public swimming pools to teaching university students about parks and recreation management.
Reflections on a Life Afloat
Growing up in San Diego, I developed an early affinity for the water, spending countless hours at the beach and in backyard pools. This aquatic foundation laid the groundwork for my future pursuits, both personal and professional. As the Aquatic Director for 15 public swimming pools, I oversaw the hiring and training of over 150 lifeguards each summer to keep recreational swimmers safe, teach swimming lessons, and promote water safety.
One of our most successful initiatives was the free Life Vest Loan Program, a collaborative effort with the local fire department and Sacramento County’s beachfronts. This program provided families and individuals with access to life jackets, empowering them to enjoy the water safely. Additionally, the university-operated aquatic center where I worked offered students and visitors a range of water-based activities, from kayaking to stand-up paddleboarding, all while prioritizing safety and environmental stewardship.
Finding Freedom on the Water
Beyond my professional responsibilities, the water has been a constant source of joy and relaxation in my personal life. In 2009, my husband’s avid windsurfing hobby inspired me to try the sport myself, and I found myself spending more time in the water than on the board during those early days. Undeterred, I persevered, eventually becoming a competent windsurfer and discovering the thrill of gliding across the waves.
As my skills progressed, I grew to prefer the stability and versatility of stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). The ability to sit, kneel, or stand on the board allowed me to explore the waterways with a sense of freedom and connection to the natural world. Whether paddling against the current for a workout or leisurely floating with the tide, SUP became my go-to choice for aquatic adventures.
Adapting to New Surroundings
When my husband and I retired and relocated to the Inland Northwest in 2020, we had to make some adjustments to our water-centric lifestyle. While windsurfing opportunities were now a five-hour drive away, we embraced the local lakes and rivers, discovering new ways to enjoy the water. Our inflatable SUPs proved to be invaluable during our travels, allowing us to explore the serene waterways of Prescott, Arizona, and the Spokane region.
Celebrating the Seasons on the Water
As the seasons change, so too do the ways in which I connect with the water. In the summer, I relish the opportunity to beat the heat by paddling the local lakes, finding solace in the gentle lapping of the waves and the tranquility of being afloat. During the autumn months, I watch in awe as the vibrant fall foliage is reflected in the still waters, a breathtaking sight that inspires me to keep exploring.
Even in the winter, when the lakes are frozen, the water continues to call me. I’ve found joy in bundling up and walking along the icy shorelines, marveling at the intricate patterns of frost and the stark beauty of the dormant landscape. And when the first signs of spring emerge, I eagerly await the thaw, knowing that I’ll soon be back on the water, reconnecting with the rhythms of nature.
Sharing the Joy of Water Recreation
Throughout my life, I’ve been passionate about sharing the joy and benefits of water recreation with others. As an educator, I incorporated field trips and immersive activities into my Parks and Recreation Management courses, exposing students to the wonders of aquatic environments. I’ve also enjoyed mentoring new paddlers, teaching them the fundamentals of SUP and instilling a sense of confidence and safety on the water.
Whether it’s introducing a young child to the magic of swimming or encouraging a reluctant adult to try a new water sport, I find deep fulfillment in helping others discover the transformative power of the aquatic realm. The water has the ability to soothe, energize, and inspire, and I’m committed to ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to experience its restorative effects.
Embracing the Unexpected
As a water enthusiast, I’ve learned to embrace the unexpected and the unpredictable. From the awe-inspiring displays of the northern lights to the stunning sunsets that paint the sky and reflect in the still waters, each moment on the water is a unique and treasured experience.
Earlier this year, I was thrilled to witness the vibrant aurora borealis in our local night sky, a sight that I had only dreamed of seeing. Capturing these ephemeral moments with my camera has become a cherished pastime, allowing me to share the beauty of the natural world with others.
Cultivating a Leisure Lifestyle
My life-long love affair with the water has been a driving force in shaping my leisure lifestyle. Whether it’s paddling, swimming, or simply floating and taking in the serenity of the surroundings, the water has become an integral part of my daily routine and an essential component of my overall well-being.
As I continue to navigate the ebbs and flows of life, I remain grateful for the opportunities the water has provided me – the physical and mental rejuvenation, the connections forged with loved ones, and the profound sense of wonder and appreciation for the natural world. It is my sincere hope that through my advocacy and community engagement, I can inspire others to embrace the transformative power of water and the boundless possibilities it holds.
